Anthurium - home care: transplant

Anthurium can be called the most popular exotic that is grown in Russia. This is due not only to the chic appearance, the abundance of varieties (the most popular is everyone's familiar with red flowers), relative unpretentiousness when compared with other exotic plants, as well as a huge number of folk signs. The people call this flower "male happiness". Anthurium flower, home care, transplantation are not too difficult. The main thing is to know certain rules.

Reasons for transplanting anthurium

Transplanting a flower can occur for various reasons: after purchase, transplanting an overgrown plant, as well as changing the container for a flower after an illness. Depending on the reason for changing the location of the plant, certain rules must be followed.

Anthurium: transplant

After the purchase

After the purchase, the anthurium must be transplanted immediately, the maximum storage period for the previous container is no more than 5 days. He's not the kind of plant that can wait. How to transplant anthurium after purchase:

  1. Remove all existing peduncles.
  2. Remove the plant from the pot in which it grew in the store.
  3. Get rid of the soil in which the flower grew, shake off the roots as much as possible, while not damaging them.
  4. Treat the roots with "Fitolavin". It is an excellent biofungicide that is safe. It disinfects the root system, preventing the appearance of fungal diseases.
  5. A good drainage layer is poured onto the bottom of the new flowerpot (25% of the total volume of the pot). Expanded clay is best suited. A layer of sphagnum is laid on top of it. Further, a flower is already exposed.
  6. The voids are filled with prepared soil so that the growth point is located at the same level with the topsoil.

Transfer after purchase

The first watering is done depending on the temperature in the room. If it is warm enough there, then you can water the plant immediately, but in a cool room it is worth waiting a day so that the injured roots moved to a new place get used to the change of scenery a little.

Important!Since all parts of the anthurium contain poisonous sap, work on its transplant should always be carried out with rubber gloves to avoid burns to the skin.

Planned transplant

The main reasons for a planned transplant are:

  • the tightness of the pot, when the roots are completely entwined with an earthen lump;
  • improperly selected composition of the substrate, due to which anthurium cannot grow and develop normally.

Depending on the reason, the transplant is carried out either by transferring it to a new, more spacious pot with preservation of the earthen coma, or by cleaning the roots from the old soil and planting the flower in a new nutrient mixture.

Important! Adults actively flowering plants need to be transplanted into a new pot once every about 3 years. It all depends on the conditions of growth, development and age of the plant.

The fact that a transplant is necessary is indicated by the roots that look out of the pot from above, and also make their way through the drainage hole.This is due to the fact that the roots do not find a place and food inside the earthen coma and break out, hoping to get them from the outside.

To prevent the flower from being damaged during transplantation, it is thoroughly watered before starting the procedure. This will make the soil softer and easier to fall out of the pot. If the container is made of plastic, you can try to wrinkle it a little so that the soil moves away from the walls, and it is easier for the grower to remove the flower.

Before planting in a new pot, it is necessary to pour a layer of drainage, on top of which a layer of fresh soil should be placed. The plant is carefully transferred there, the remaining voids are filled with earth.

Lush anthurium

If the pot is not much larger than the flowerpot in which the anthurium grew before, it will bloom soon. It is worth giving preference to such containers in which the depth is approximately equal to the diameter. If a vessel is too wide, anthurium will not bloom soon. At first, he will build up the root system, braiding the earthen ball as much as possible, only after that he will pay attention to the ground part and throw out the peduncles.

The final stage of the transplant will be compaction of the soil. This must be done carefully, without touching the delicate roots. The top layer should be renewed, water the plant again and mulch with sphagnum to reduce the amount of evaporated liquid.

Anthurium mix

Transplanting a diseased plant

A florist should worry that the soil mixture is not suitable for the flower if:

  • spots appear on stems and leaves;
  • leaves wither, begin to turn yellow, their turgor is lost;
  • growth and development slow down, flowering does not occur.

The problem can be anything: an excess or lack of moisture in the substrate, its scarcity, the appearance of pests, diseases or pathogenic bacteria. In such cases, you need to transplant the anthurium and provide it with care in the future. How to properly transplant anthurium in case of illness, step by step instructions:

  1. Anthurium is watered and carefully removed from the flowerpot.
  2. The old soil is removed as much as possible, the roots are carefully examined.
  3. If the roots begin to rot, the rotted areas are cut to a healthy place, the cuts are sprinkled with crushed charcoal or treated with a disinfectant.
  4. The ground part is processed: the inflorescences are removed along with the peduncles, all yellow and dry leaves are cut off, this will help the plant to rehabilitate faster after an illness.
  5. The plant, on the roots of which rot was found, must be treated with a fungicide.

Advice! It is better to choose a new container for transplanting, but if this is not possible, it is necessary to disinfect the old pot so that no traces of bacteria remain on it. The soil must be changed completely.

Sick anthurium

Terms for transplanting a flower "male happiness"

Planned transplantation of anthurium takes place most often in late winter - early spring, when the flower rests before the start of the active growing season.

Can you transplant during flowering? During flowering, it is not worth replanting without the need for transplanting. But if the flower is sick, then the peduncles need to be cut off and the procedure carried out.

Preparatory stage

All that is needed for the preparatory stage is a properly selected pot, soil, drainage and the plant itself.

In which pot to plant anthurium

You should not choose a spacious pot, it is better to dwell on those in which the root system will enter completely, but the container will not be too wide and deep. Large spaces should not remain, otherwise the development of the green part will slow down, and flowering will not occur for a long time.

What kind of soil is needed

Anthurium is a flower that will feel good only in a very loose substrate.Therefore, even when buying soil designed specifically for these plants, it is worth adding perlite or some other baking powder to it. An optimal soil mixture should provide oxygen access and pass water well.

Attention! If you make a mistake with the choice of soil, the flower will begin to wither, turn yellow, its growth and development will slow down, and the young plant may die altogether.

There are different variants of the mixture into which it is recommended to transplant anthurium.

The first:

  • ready-made mixture for planting orchids;
  • crushed charcoal;
  • a little turf.

A variant of a self-prepared composition:

  • sphagnum;
  • peat;
  • coconut fiber.

In this case, all components must be mixed in equal proportions.

Advice! Topsoil taken from a spruce forest is also suitable for soil renewal. But such a mixture must be disinfected with a manganese solution.

How to process the roots of a flower

When transplanting an adult tall plant with a large number of aerial roots, the processing process can be minimized or not carried out at all. For transplanting a healthy adult plant by the transshipment method, additional processing is not necessary.

When transplanting after acquiring a flower or if the plant does not like the soil, the roots must be cleaned and held in a solution of potassium permanganate. You can use any other disinfectant from a specialized store. If the roots had to be cut, the cut points are most often sprinkled with crushed charcoal.

  • Watering

  • Top dressing

Top dressing is purchased at a flower shop. Fertilization is carried out once every 2 weeks. Mineral substances alternate with organic ones.

  • External factors

The light should be bright, diffused. Anthurium is a resident of the tropics, therefore, the conditions for keeping this exotic must be appropriate. Humidity should always be high; it is better to install a plate of water, wet expanded clay next to the pot or buy a humidifier. Temperatures in summer can reach +28 ° С, in winter - about +20 ° С.

Anthurium transplant and care are simple procedures. But their rules need to be known to flower growers who decided to start breeding this beautiful exotic.
