Terry geranium - the most popular varieties

Terry pelargonium is one of the most popular flowering plants. It belongs to the genus Pelargonium. It is not difficult to achieve a beautiful flowering of a decorative culture, pelargonium is distinguished by its unpretentious care.

Terry geranium: description

Terry rose geranium is a perennial plant with large spherical inflorescences, which consist of corollas with eight or more petals. The leaves are round with wavy edges. There are rare varieties with black, golden, bronze and purple leaves.

The varieties do not differ in stature, most of them are specially bred hybrids

On a note! Geranium and pelargonium are different plants (pelargonium is indoor, geranium is garden). Terry pelargonium is not related to the genus Geranium. Despite this, there is often confusion about the names. Many people are more accustomed to call a flower on a windowsill and a flower bed geranium.

The best indoor varieties

There are about 500 varieties of geraniums, differing in the shade of the petals and the size of the bush:

  • Pelargonium pebbles. It is a compact, neat bush that does not require shaping. Against the background of the small size of the plant itself, double pink-crimson flowers look even larger.
  • Pelargonium Mimi. Terry dwarf pelargonium Mimi is recognizable by the delicate pink shade of the inflorescences. Bushes grow very slowly.
  • Mallorca pelargonium. The unusual shape of Mallorca's pelargonium flowers (you can find names such as Pelargonium Mallorca, Majorca, majorca) explains the classification of this variety as cactus. The main feature of the plant is its jagged petals with red, white and greenish stripes.
  • Pelargonium Saxdalens Selma. Selma is a pelargonium with strong, low shoots and pale pink inflorescences. She will decorate any flower bed or room.
  • Shelk Moira. This is a spectacular variety of terry pelargonium. The miniature bush is decorated with dense light apricot inflorescences.
  • Brookside Fantasy. This representative of the zoned pelargonium attracts attention with its bright pink flowers. The neat bushes form on their own.
  • Bold Carmine. A compact plant with vibrant foliage and crimson flowers. Bold Carmine has an active, profuse flowering.
  • Pelargonium Majesta. It is a geranium with vibrant purple flowers. A short bush willingly branches and develops.
  • Ludwigsburger Flair. A dwarf variety that requires the formation of a bush. The pink shade of the petals becomes brighter towards the center.
  • Lara Harmony. When fully expanded, the lush, bright pink flowers of this variety are incredibly similar to roses. The size of the bush and the color of the leaves are standard.

The reverse side of the petals is almost white, so it gives the impression of two colors

Care features

Among the decorative and flowering indoor flowers, there are very few such attractive and at the same time unpretentious representatives of the care, such as home geranium. The flower is comfortable at room temperature. It tolerates the summer heat well.

On a note! In winter, care should be taken that the leaves of the plant do not touch cold glass.

Pelargonium is a light-loving flower; with a lack of lighting, its decorative effect is lost.In summer, it is advisable to cover its leaves from direct sunlight. The rest of the year, she is only happy with the light.

Geranium does not like it when the air humidity is very high. You cannot spray the plant. Ventilate the room more often.

In the summer, pelargonium needs daily watering, but at the same time, waterlogging of the soil and water getting on the leaves and inflorescences should not be allowed. In winter, geraniums are watered less often - 2-3 times a week.

What should be the soil

The soil for pelargonium should be fertile and loose. For indoor maintenance, you can purchase ready-made soil or prepare it yourself from equal proportions of garden soil, sand and peat.

Before planting, a layer of expanded clay or pebbles should be placed on the bottom of the pot. In order for oxygen to reach the roots, the soil must be regularly loosened. In summer, you can decorate a flower bed with pelargonium, but you should not plant a flower in open ground, it is better to leave it in a pot. This will prevent root overgrowth and protect the flower from fungi and parasites.

Geranium in a pot on the site

During the growing season, geranium needs mineral fertilizers. It is enough to feed the plant once every 2 weeks. No fertilization is required in autumn and winter.

If the roots of the flower are peeking out of the drainage holes, the plant has slowed down its growth, and the soil dries out very quickly - it's time to transplant. The new pot should be 3 to 4 cm larger. The procedure must be carried out carefully so as not to damage the roots. Geraniums should be transplanted no more than once every 2 years. Periodically, you can add fresh soil to the pot.

On a note! You can plant 2-3 geranium bushes in a large pot, so they will bloom better.

In the fall, pelargonium can turn into a shapeless, unattractive bush. After flowering stops, it is advisable to cut off the homemade geranium.

The more you cut the geranium, the more shoots will appear next spring.

Flowering and dormant periods

Terry geranium blooms from February to September with proper care. During this period, all inflorescences have time to replace each other in turn.

Terry pelargonium does not have a pronounced rest period. In winter, the plant does not shed its leaves, but rarely blooms. During this period, it is necessary to reduce watering and abandon fertilizing. It is also desirable to lower the temperature to +20 ° C. It is better to put the flower pot on the windowsill - so the coolness from the glass will be enough for a comfortable winter life.

Geranium is not only a beautiful but also a useful plant. It releases bactericidal substances that kill microbes. Medicinal infusions and decoctions are prepared from the leaves and roots of the flower.
