Cutting roses using the burrito method - what is it

Any summer resident wants his garden to be beautiful and uses a variety of plants for this. However, the most popular adornment is roses - the real queens of any plot. You always want a lot of bushes, so a variety of propagation methods are used. Cutting roses using the burrito method allows you to get new plants without much effort and cost.

Cutting a rose using the burrito method - what is it

The word "burrito" has Spanish roots and is translated as "donkey". Although in fact this is the name of a popular Mexican dish. It is a wheat cake in which vegetables, meat and other various fillings are wrapped.

Propagation by cuttings is often used to produce new plants.

The essence of rooting roses using the burrito method is absolutely the same - cut cuttings are wrapped in newspaper or paper. In this case, the paper "cake" must be wet. As a result, the most suitable conditions are created for the callus to appear on the branch first, and then the roots.

For reference! Callus is a growth that forms on wounds under suitable conditions.

Thanks to him, the formation of roots gradually takes place. After some time, quite normal roots and shoots appear on the branches, the cutting can be planted.

Advantages and disadvantages of an unusual method of grafting

If we talk about the burrito method, the reproduction of roses in this way has both positive and negative properties. The advantages of using the burrito method include the following:

  • The method gives the best result among all similar ones. If the varieties are expensive and capricious, then the burrito method is best suited.
  • When using this procedure, it is possible to independently control the appearance of the root system compared to when the branches are immediately planted in the ground. You can get rid of spoiled cuttings immediately.
  • At any time, you can change the germination conditions - increase or decrease humidity, temperature and other indicators.
  • You can use the technique even in winter.

The main disadvantage of using such a procedure is that culling occurs only after the cuttings are planted in the ground. Roots can appear on almost every branch, but not all will take root after planting in the ground.

When to choose this breeding method

Despite the fact that the burrito method is quite simple and does not require much effort, it is not suitable for breeding in all cases. When can roses be propagated by cuttings? More on this in detail.

Preparing to use the burrito method is very simple.

You should not carry out the procedure in the summer, there will be no result from it. In summer, the twigs are still too young, their bark is thin, so the created conditions will not suit them - they will simply rot in a large amount of moisture.

Also, do not try to propagate long and large roses from bouquets that are sold in stores. Most often, these varieties are grown in other countries, so they simply will not take root in the climate of Russia, even if they still have a root system.

Attention! For the burrito method, simple garden roses are excellent, which are fully adapted to the climatic conditions and are able to endure wintering.

Step-by-step burrito grafting procedure

The procedure for proper home breeding of roses is quite simple to perform, but it is important to strictly follow all points and sequence.

Cutting cuttings

To cut the cuttings, you need to prepare a sharp knife. The branches should be about 20 cm in length and about 5 mm in circumference - the thinner ones will simply dry out, there will not be enough necessary substances.

Each sprout should have three dormant buds. The stalk should be from the middle of the shoot. All branches must be carefully examined. If there is any damage or traces of disease, then such a sprout must be discarded. Be sure to remove the leaves and shoots.

The finished bundle is very similar to the Mexican burrito

Preparation of cuttings and their processing

Finished twigs must be treated with special means.

In a small bowl, dilute the drug to stimulate the formation of the root system. After that, the cuttings are immersed in a liquid so that it contains about a third part. Plants are left alone for about 6 hours.

By the way, to stimulate the formation of roots, you can also use some folk remedies - use solutions of aloe, honey and others.

After the specified time, the branches must be removed, treated with special antifungal drugs, so that rot and disease do not occur.

Attention! All funds are used strictly in the indicated dosage.

Packing cuttings

After preparation, the cuttings begin to pack, below is a detailed description:

  • It is necessary to fold the branches in small bunches - several pieces each.
  • Prepare a newspaper in several layers.
  • The bundle is wrapped in newspaper so that nothing can be seen.
  • The paper product must be wetted, but so that it does not soften and fall apart. Excess moisture must be drained.
  • After that, the finished "burrito" is placed in a plastic bag.

Waiting and checking packets

The finished packages must be removed to a cool place, the temperature is maintained up to +18 degrees. In such conditions, the rapid formation of the root system occurs.

Calluses are growths, from which roots will then appear.

Check the packages once a week, unpack and unfold, and moisten if necessary. If mold or rot appears in the packages, then you will have to throw it away completely.

Attention! Every couple of weeks, it is necessary to process the packaging against the occurrence of fungal diseases.

The first calluses will appear on rose cuttings in about a couple of weeks. This will be quite noticeable, because small influxes form on the shoots, from which the roots will then crawl out.

Planting sprouted rose cuttings

When real roots appear on the cuttings, you can plant them in small pots or jars to root. It is recommended to purchase a special soil for roses. When planting, one condition must be observed: one kidney remains above the surface, the rest must be in the ground.

  • A container with a branch is packed in polyethylene to create a greenhouse environment.
  • The room must be at least +23 in order to root the shoots.
  • Watering and airing should be carried out periodically. After a while, the package can be opened slightly.

Young plants are planted in the ground when the threat of frost has passed. It is better to prepare the pits in advance by adding a small amount of organic matter to them. When planting, the cuttings need to be trimmed a little, leaving about 4 buds. It is important to choose the right place, it is better that it be sunny, but at first the plants should be shaded a little.

Further care of the young plant

When the small bushes grow about 15 cm, then you can start using special fertilizers at the permitted dosage.

In the first year, it is imperative to remove all the buds so that the young plant gains strength. The first flowering is possible in the second year. In autumn, the bushes are carefully covered so that they do not die from frost.

Small roots will appear pretty quickly

Application of the method at different times of the year, features

The rose burrito method can be used in the fall and winter. There are small differences for each option.

In the autumn, there are always many cuttings left after pruning, all of them can be used. Moreover, they are quite high quality and matured.

Cutting in the spring allows you to take your time, there is enough time, so the planting material is stronger. However, the possibility that the cuttings will have to be planted in pots is not excluded, because they quickly gave rise to roots, and in the spring there is no way to plant them in the ground.

For the correct winter cuttings of roses, you can use varieties that bloom for a long time until late autumn. Growing during this period is more convenient in that the risk of the formation of large roots is reduced, so you do not have to plant cuttings in pots. Winter twigs may well endure until spring planting.

Possible problems and difficulties of cuttings

Even if grafted using the burrito method, problems may arise:

  • At low temperatures, callus will form, but roots will not develop.
  • At high temperatures, the twigs often die or dry out.
  • Rot is formed when humidity and temperature are high.
  • Cuttings can get sick if not treated with special means.
  • If the plants died after planting, then the land is not suitable for them.

Thanks to a simple propagation technique, a large number of roses can be obtained.

The burrito method is pretty simple. If you follow all the rules, you can get a lot of rose bushes without spending a lot of time and effort.
