Cutting roses: how to propagate roses by cuttings, planting and care

A bouquet of beautiful, large and fresh roses is a great gift. But not a single, even the most beautiful, bouquet can please the eye forever and someday will fade. Many people want to give flowers a chance to live by trying to root them. But you need to approach this responsibly and observe all the nuances, since roses are known for their tenderness and exactingness.

What you need to know about cutting roses

Flowers from a bouquet can be given a second life

Not every flower is able to take root from the cuttings, and especially a rose. To grow a beautiful lush bush out of it, you need to follow the recommendations:

  • Practice shows that domestically produced flowers take root best, since they are grown in the local climate, and imported roses from Holland, Kenya and other countries usually grow on top dressing, which will be difficult to get in Russia. And the care of such flowers needs a special one.
  • Strong cuttings with live leaves and buds are suitable for growing. If you take a stem that is too weak or coarse, it is unlikely that it will be possible to grow a bush from it.
  • Flowers must be fresh. The longer they sit in the vase, the less chance they have of surviving.
  • Summer plants take root best (May-June). There is a chance for the autumn / spring ones, but it is not recommended to root the winter ones.

Note! A florist should be prepared for the fact that the flowers on the bush he has grown may differ from those in the bouquet.

Suitable rose for grafting

Pros of propagating roses by cuttings

Not everyone can afford to buy a rose bush right away. And sometimes there is a situation when I liked the bouquet so much that I wanted to grow the same flowers myself. Cutting is the most affordable and easiest way to grow bush roses. When using it, a flower from a bouquet can turn into a large beautiful plant that will delight the eye for many years.

If you take a rose from a local bush, the success rate of cuttings increases. Such a plant easily adapts to the soil, as it is accustomed to the local climate and soil characteristics. It will quickly become a full-fledged bush.

The main test for a rooted rose is to survive the first winter. To do this, you need to properly cover the flower, then it will tolerate the cold calmly.

How to properly prepare cuttings

The fresher the flower is, the more likely it is to take root well. Florists recommend keeping the roses in cool water before the procedure to soak them in moisture. The preparation of cuttings includes several stages:

  • Choosing a rose with a suitable stem.
  • Flower pruning. It is necessary to leave the middle part of the stem from 8 to 20 cm in size (it is imperative that there are buds on it). From above, the cutting should be cut straight, and from below at an angle of 45 degrees).
  • Removal of leaves and thorns.
  • Trimming the length of the upper leaves by half.
  • Leaving the cuttings in water (about a day). Some growers add stimulants to the water, for example, "Kornevin". So the plant will receive the necessary substances and will be more tenacious.

What the cuttings should look like

Note! You can add aloe juice to the water in a ratio of 1: 9 or dry yeast - 25 g per 3 liters of warm water. This will protect the cutting from harmful bacteria.

When to cut roses

The best time for grafting is summer and late spring.. During this period, the stems do not yet have time to coarse and root perfectly. If you rush and start early, there is a high likelihood of failure, since the buds are not yet ripe. Then all the vitality of the rose will be spent on the development of the buds, and not on strengthening the plant itself as a whole.

In addition, roses do not tolerate winter well, especially if it is their first. Therefore, experienced gardeners know that it is best to propagate roses by cuttings in summer, for example, in July - this increases the chances of their successful growth. If you plant flowers in the fall, they do not have time to get stronger before the cold weather.

Harvesting and rooting of cuttings of roses

Because of its simplicity, cuttings are very popular. Therefore, there are many ways of rooting cuttings - from water to more original ones, for example, in potatoes. Below are step-by-step instructions for grafting roses at home.

Growing in a package

This method is good in that it does not require the purchase of special dishes, since a regular plastic bag is used instead. Germination takes place like this:

  1. The 1 \ 3 bag is filled with soil.
  2. On the cut, the stalk is treated with a growth-stimulating substance.
  3. The space remaining in the bag is filled with air, the bag is tied.

Roses grown in this way must be suspended. The package should be placed on the sunny side (south or east). If done correctly, the first shoots can be seen in 2-3 weeks. It will be possible to permanently transplant a rose into the ground only after 2-3 months.

How to cut roses in potatoes

This original method requires 1 potato and a pot of prepared soil. Next, you need to do the following:

  1. It is better to choose a tuber of medium size.
  2. Remove all eyes from the fetus.
  3. Make a hole in the vegetable along the diameter of the cutting and up to the middle of the tuber.
  4. Treat the bottom of the cutting with a growth stimulator.
  5. Insert the plant into the potatoes until it stops.
  6. Put potatoes in the ground and sprinkle with earth on top (thin layer).
  7. Put a bottle on top of the handle.

Note! If the sprouting of a cut of a rose in a potato is carried out in the spring, then the vegetable can be put directly into the ground on the site. Future seedlings are located at a distance of 15-20 cm from each other. Cover them with foil on top.

How to root a rose in water

The easiest and most common method that even beginners can do. It is important to choose the right water - it must be settled or rainwater. It is not recommended to use melted snow, as it contains a huge amount of harmful emissions that will certainly not contribute to the growth of a flower. Next, you need to do the following:

  1. Pour water into a clean container.
  2. Place the handle in it.
  3. Place the vessel with the handle in a place protected from sunlight.
  4. Change water to fresh water every 2-3 days.
  5. Make sure that no traces of rot appear on the stem.

Many gardeners add a variety of nutrients to their water. This can accelerate the growth of the rose, but you need to know when to stop - if you overdo it, the solution will destroy all living cells and the efforts to root the cutting will be in vain. When the roots appear, the cutting can be planted in garden soil, covering it with a bottle or film for the first weeks.

How to propagate roses using the burrito method

Everyone knows what a burrito is - a roll-up flatbread with a filling. In the case of roses, the filling will be a plant, and a moist newspaper will play the role of a cake:

  1. The stalk is impregnated with a root growth stimulant.
  2. It is wrapped in a damp newspaper (it is important to choose the optimal amount of moisture).
  3. The resulting cake must be put in a bag and stored at room temperature.

The stalk should be checked for rot every week. When growths appear on the stem, it's time to plant roses in the ground.

Trannois way

This method is unusual in that it is required to prepare a rose before grafting:

  • A bud and several leaves are cut from the stem.
  • Then you should wait until the lower buds on the branch increase.
  • Cuttings are cut from the stem. They should be planted at an angle of 45 degrees in a sunny place (this way the root system will develop faster).
  • The plants are covered with bottles (about 5 liters in volume), previously divided into 2 parts.
  • For planted cuttings, create an artificial shade from branches or leaves.

This method allows the plant to be saturated with nutrients from the soil. And since the bottles are removed only closer to winter, the roses have time to grow and get stronger, which means they will endure the winter easier.

Note! Using the Trannoy method, it is easy to make a climbing hedge of rose bushes, which is used by flower growers to decorate the house.

Rooting roses from a bouquet

This will be somewhat more difficult than growing cuttings from a bush. The bouquets may contain imported flowers that are grown on chemicals and are abundantly processed to maintain freshness. Such roses will not take root in Russia due to the climatic conditions and the lack of professional care they are used to.

Note! For successful rooting of cuttings, it is better to use roses cut on the day of purchase and grown in the region of residence.

How to plant a rose with a handle

For rose lovers, cuttings are a good way to preserve their favorite bouquet and make it long lasting. After planting a rooted cutting, it needs special care - regular watering, fertilization, removal of weeds and buds (if the plant is still too small, the buds will take away all its strength).

Gardeners should be patient, since the cutting will begin to bloom for at least 3 years. Before that, you need to carefully look after him and prevent the branches from turning yellow, as well as being affected by various diseases. It is also necessary to get rid of harmful insects that can attack a young plant in time.

Before planting, it is recommended to make drainage - cover the bottom of the hole for the rose seedling with stones. This will help prevent root decay and the plant is likely to take root faster under such conditions.

Roses grown from cuttings

It must be remembered that a rose is a delicate and rather whimsical plant, therefore, when growing it, you will need maximum patience and perseverance. Over time, this will bear fruit in the form of beautiful fragrant flowers in the garden or on the windowsill.
