How dracaena blooms - what types, proper care

Dracaena is a compact, palm-like tree with narrow leaves that bloom like a fountain from the top of a thickened stem. A cute, unpretentious plant, which so often can be found in offices and apartments, fits universally into the interior, but few have seen how dracaena blooms.

A tropical guest needs a humid hot climate for bud formation. Flowering occurs 1 time in 5-10 years. It is thanks to the peace and stability that such greens are chosen for decorating workspaces, but you need to know a few features of the flower in order to create a safe, cozy environment for it.

Fragrant dracaena flowers give a feeling of spring

What varieties of Dracaena bloom

Not all dracaena are capable of producing flowers. Barren plants are considered safe and optimal for living and public areas. However, there are several varieties that produce lush, pleasing flowers. As a rule, they look like conical candles or panicles, where many small flowers are collected in a common bouquet. The shade of dracaena flowers ranges from white and pale cream to pinkish brown nodules.

Another important feature is the pronounced aroma of the buds.

Important! Many varieties of trees are toxic, it is dangerous to inhale the vapors of its sap with pollen.

This can cause not only allergies and dizziness, but also poisoning. Some varieties give off a pungent, unpleasant odor similar to fresh organic debris and sugary pollen. Others have a pleasant floral bouquet that combines notes of fruit, ether and herbaceous nuances.

There are more than 100 varieties in the genus Dracaena, among which only 4 types can bloom in an unusual environment, for example, in the middle latitudes of Russia:

  • Dracaena Godseffiana is a short bush with rather wide and spreading oval leaves that include creamy blotches. This subspecies dissolves yellowish flowers with a pleasant flair.
  • Dracaena Fragrans is a fragrant variety that blooms most often indoors. The tree grows up to 2 m, which is remarkable - after flowering it branches. This is a frost-resistant type that is not afraid of temperatures down to –10 ° С.
  • Dracaena Marginata or Bordered is an interesting species with a ringed trunk and thin leaves, highlighted by purple edging. The Marginata plant has faded, unpleasant-smelling flowers, so flowering should be avoided.
  • The Dracaena Deremensis, or Derem variety, is another dangerous pungent type that produces red buds. Flowering is very rare. The exception for this species is the Varneschi palm, which produces fluffy white panicles with a pleasant aroma.

On a note! Dracaena opens its flowers and releases a bright aroma only at night, during the day the flowers close in tight knots. This prevents aggressive insects from harming the plant.

Dracaena flower - what it brings to the house, how to care for the plant

The palm tree is considered a room attendant, absorbing harmful substances and purifying the air. This effect is produced by the leaves of the plant during the dormant period, but the flowers can exude compounds that are poisonous for humans and animals, therefore, during the flowering period, it is better to take the tub with dracaena to the balcony or veranda.

The symbolically compact and slender house palm dracaena is a talisman of happiness and stability, a harmonious calm atmosphere. It helps you concentrate, get tired less or relax after a hard day at work. Therefore, the plant is installed as a kind of filter and pleasant decor in offices, public spaces and at home. It fits perfectly into a green area with succulents, hanging flowers and all kinds of lush plants.

Dracaena - flowering, as often happens

Dracaena, like many tropical plants, blooms very rarely: once every 5-8 years. At home, in the absence of special care, even a flowering variety may never bring buds. In the natural environment, already at 3-5 years of age, the dracaena begins to bloom and grow rapidly.

In good home conditions, a palm tree can produce flowers once every 4 years, but even this process requires a long ripening. Flowering buds are laid and developed for a very long time - within a year.

Catching a dracaena bloom is akin to finding a lucky clover

A feature of some varieties of the dracaena tree is the circular abscission of flowers. During the flowering period (which usually lasts about a month, but may depend on the maturity and strength of the specimen), the plant constantly releases and sheds renewable buds, and this can be accompanied by the release of sticky scented nectar.

Dracaena flowering conditions

If the owners are convinced that their plant variety is not dangerous, special conditions can be created for the dracaena to bloom at home. A tropical tree loves heat and high humidity, so flower growers recommend taking the flower out to the balcony in the summer and watering more often, preventing the soil in the pot from drying out. It is important to cover the leaves of the plant from direct ultraviolet rays, otherwise the sun can scorch the leaves, which will lead to their death.

Note! For full bloom, a palm tree needs space, typical of tropical forests. If the tree is kept in a greenhouse or a room with ceilings of 2.5-3 m, the chances of waiting for flowers increase.

Dracaena blooms better in southern regions or zones with a changeable climate, where the average temperature in summer is at least a month in the region of +30 ° C. For comfort, the flower needs a temperature regime of + 26 ... + 35 ° С, constant foliage moisture and light shading.

The tree needs a regular warm (but not hot) shower, which will saturate and cleanse the leaves from dust, and therefore accelerate photosynthesis. For a good supply of the root system, it is best to place the palm tub in a pallet filled with pebbles or other drainage.

Important! It is not worth provoking the flowering of a poisonous dracaena at home. In addition to the poisonous properties, florists note that the exuded smell does not disappear from the premises for a long time even after the heyday.

How often to water when blooming

Unlike many other indoor plants, dracaena is very fond of watering. Due to a sufficient amount of moisture, its trunk is strengthened and "prickly" leaves grow. The plant periodically needs to be watered at the root and often sprayed greens with warm water with a temperature of 22-30 ° C.

Dracaena does not require specific care, but does not tolerate drought

In order for the dracaena to bloom and not drop flowers ahead of time, you need to maintain intensive watering. The soil in the pot should not dry out, but you should not flood the plant either, otherwise it will get sick. The best thing to do is drainage.

Important! Dracaena bloom at home is strongly influenced by water quality. Tap water, enriched with fluoride and other heavy impurities, can cause plant disease and lack of flowering. Ideally, use filtered, soft water for both foliage spraying and root saturation.

Other nuances of care

It is believed that the dracaena is a palm tree, although sometimes the flower grows in the form of a squat bush with spreading foliage. It is better to treat narrow delicate leaves with a spray bottle to wash off the dust and water the plant. More juicy thick leaves can be wiped with a soft damp cloth, this will mechanically remove a potential threat - pathogens of phyto-diseases.

In addition to regular water procedures, the flower needs a constant climate, it should be protected from drafts, periodically ventilated the room, and more often than usual during flowering.

On a note! Florists recommend breeding if the dracaena has blossomed. It is believed that such a bush will bring good luck. It is advised to transplant on a full moon. It is customary to give a stalk of a blooming dracaena to loved ones.

If the palm begins to develop poorly, it is worth pruning the plant: several shoots can grow at the cut site. The resulting cutting can be rooted in a sandy-peat nutrient mixture (1: 1). After cutting, the exposed area must be treated with crushed coal to avoid contamination of the plant.

Dracaena blooming in the open air fascinate

The house palm dracaena in all its varieties is a pleasant companion in any room. And if you manage to catch the period of its flowering, the delicate aroma with lime-honey and jasmine shades will give a real feeling of a holiday and a tropical paradise.
