Hyacinth - home care, growing in a pot

Caring for a hyacinth at home in a pot is not a difficult process, even a beginner can handle it. How to properly prepare the bulb for distillation, and after the appearance of the flower, take care of, below in the article.

Hyacinth: home care in a pot

Hyacinth is a perennial, bulbous flower that responds to favorable conditions with a lush color. But after flowering, the plant needs rest, when the formation of the future peduncle and the bulb itself is taking place.

Hyacinth can be grown both in soil and in a flowerpot

Forcing bulbs at home

At home, the bulb can be planted for distillation at any time, regardless of the rhythm of the plant, getting beautiful flowers by a particular date. Forcing of bulbs is carried out both in soil and in water.

Forcing bulbs in the ground follows the following algorithm:

  1. The pot or container is filled with earth and a hyacinth bulb is planted in it. This should be done so that ¾ of the bulb is immersed in the ground, and ¼ is raised above the ground.
  2. It is important to keep the distance between the bulbs. The distance in the container between them should not be less than 25 cm.

Water distillation is simpler than soil distillation and consists of the following stages:

  1. For distillation, soft water is needed - melted snow or collected rainwater, into which mineral fertilizing and a growth stimulator are added.
  2. Water is poured into a container and an onion is placed in it. Its lower part should touch moisture slightly.
  3. The container is placed in a dark and cool place.

Important! Every two weeks it is worth changing the water with top dressing for fresh water.

Choosing a pot and soil for planting bulbs

Hyacinths, planting and care of which are carried out at home, will delight with abundant and long flowering, provided that the soil and flowerpot are correctly selected. A flowerpot for growing hyacinth is an important component, and if it is chosen incorrectly, the plant will not take root.

The pot should be 2-4 cm wider in diameter than the bulb, deep enough to accommodate the hyacinth and a drainage layer with soil. When choosing containers, it is worthwhile to monitor whether there are drainage holes in them, if not, make them.

For a home flower hyacinth, the soil and its composition are not so important, the main thing is that it should not be sour. You can prepare a mixture for growing at home on your own by mixing peat and coarse sand in equal parts, or you can buy a ready-made earth mixture in a store or supermarket.

Proper care is the result of a beautiful hyacinth flower

Leaving during flowering

The bulbous flower hyacinth is unpretentious in care, requires a minimum of attention. Anyone can grow it on a windowsill, in a room pot, the main thing is to follow the care instructions.

Lighting

Indoor hyacinth maintenance provides for sufficient daylight hours. It is important to provide the bulbs with up to 12 hours of sun color. If in summer there is enough natural light, then in winter it is important to turn on special lighting every day.

Temperature

Step-by-step instructions for caring for the bulb prescribe that there are no drafts and nearby heating radiators, sudden temperature changes. Florists call the optimum temperature for hyacinth 20-22 ° C.But, since hyacinth is considered a garden flower, keeping it on the balcony or in the garden in the summer will benefit him. In winter, only room maintenance.

Watering and spraying

Step-by-step care also provides for proper watering, and most importantly, regular. It is important to remember that the water is pre-defended, and it is poured exclusively along the edge of the bowl, preventing moisture from entering the outlet of the leaves.

Note! It is best to use soft water - melted snow or rainwater, preheating it to room temperature.

Hyacinth care does not involve spraying. The maximum is wiping the leaves with a damp, clean cloth.

Top dressing

Hyacinth care involves regular feeding. It can be both ready-made store-bought fertilizers for flowering plants, and organic, for example, chicken droppings.

Important! Experienced flower growers carry out top dressing 1 time with an interval of 2 weeks.

The first feeding is carried out after the hyacinth is put into the light after dormancy, if it has wintered in a flowerpot (although this is wrong, some growers often do this). For the first feeding, choose a composition rich in phosphorus.

The second top dressing is carried out two weeks later and phosphorus and potash fertilizers are applied to the soil. For the third time, they feed the plants at the end of flowering, before preparing for wintering. In this case, formulations rich in potassium, as well as superphosphate, are suitable.

Timely feeding guarantees abundant flowering

Before applying liquid fertilizer, the plant should be watered, and after that it is imperative to loosen the soil. Moisture in the soil will not allow the root system to "burn out", and loosening will not allow useful substances to evaporate.

Post-flowering care

How to care for hyacinth after flowering? The bulb can be simply dug up and transplanted into the garden, or you can save it and grow a full-fledged plant next time. After flowering has stopped, the peduncle is carefully cut off. Then continue to water the onion in the pot, but in moderation, gradually reducing it. How long? Until the leaves wither and dry.

Next, the bulb is removed from the flowerpot, cleaned of dried foliage, if there are children, they should be separated. The bulb is then prepared for home storage until the next planting. It should be noted that the lifespan of hyacinth bulbs is 8-10 years, and they will give flowers every 1-2 years.

Storing bulbs at home

When the flower is allowed to bloom, it is time to prepare it for home storage. At the very beginning, the roots are cleaned of the earth, then the onion itself is removed from the husk, treated with a solution of potassium permanganate and allowed to dry for some time in a well-ventilated room or outside at a temperature of at least 20 ° C.

Important! The bulb is dried in the shade, otherwise the direct sun can damage it and the root system, and next year the hyacinth will not "knock out" the peduncle.

After drying, they are folded and stored in boxes with sawdust or paper bags. Further, the storage of dried and disinfected bulbs is carried out in several stages.

  1. The first stage takes place indoors at a temperature of 24-26 ° C for at least two months.
  2. The second period is just before planting, when March is already approaching, and it is necessary to drive out the peduncle on the eve of the holidays. In this case, the bulb is stored at a temperature of 16-18 ° C. The room should not be too dry so that the bulb does not dry out.

If it is necessary to shorten the first period, the room temperature is raised to 30 ° C.

Reproduction methods

Under natural conditions, the bulbous plant hyacinth reproduces by baby bulbs. But at home you can propagate it in other ways - by seeds and children, cuttings and cutting out the bottom, dissecting.

Note! The most laborious and not always effective method of hyacinth propagation is by seeds. Breeders use it if they want to develop new varieties, rare colors.

Sowing with seeds for an ordinary grower is an unpromising method, since it requires a lot of time and effort, and it is not a fact that the seed will sprout.

Where to get the seeds from? After the capsule has formed, it has dried, it opens and seeds fall out of it. They are sown in nutritious and loose soil, without sprinkling with earth, sprayed from a spray bottle. The container is covered with a film and removed to a warm place at a temperature of 24-26 ° C, periodically raising the shelter and spraying. After the appearance of the first shoots, they are looked after until the first 2-3 leaves appear, and then they are planted in open ground or a flowerpot.

How to propagate hyacinth at home

Planting babies is an easy way to breed hyacinths. This method is simple and has many advantages:

  • the bulb knocks out the first peduncle in the third year after planting;
  • all the characteristics of the mother plant are preserved;
  • high survival rate.

Stimulating the formation on the mother's bulb of babies is possible as follows:

Bottom cutting

This method is best used by experienced florists. Only large bulbs are suitable for this. How to do it right:

  1. A large onion, freed from the ground, is dried for a week in the shade.
  2. With a sharp knife, carefully cut out the bottom of the hyacinth. The result should be a shallow hole.
  3. The cut site is treated with charcoal or fungicide solution.

Such a bulb is planted in a flowerpot with a cut up and covered with polyethylene on top. The first babies can be expected after 2-4 months.

Reproduction of hyacinth is a simple matter

Dissecting the onion

Another way to stimulate the formation of babies on hyacinth. A sharp knife is used for work. The onion is divided into 5-6 parts, after which the slices are disassembled into scales. Slices must be treated with charcoal or a weak fungicide solution. The resulting material is stored in paper bags in the first month at a temperature of 20-25 ° C, in the second - 17-19 ° C.

Cuttings

Planting material - cuttings - is harvested during the period of bud formation. A leaf with a cutting on the bulb is selected and cut with a sharp knife at the root, the cut sites are treated with a disinfectant and a growth stimulator. Then it is planted in a nutrient substrate and covered with a film. Rooting takes place in 3-4 weeks.

Important! With this method of reproduction, the bulb is not dug out for the first two years.

Pruning

Flower pruning is mandatory, but after the end of flowering. The peduncle itself is cut off first, the main thing is not to chick it at the very root, it is worth leaving 10-20 cm. Then they wait for the leaves to dry. To speed up the process, the plant is watered less. When all the leaves are dry, they are cut off with a sharp knife or scissors.

Diseases and pests

Hyacinth, like any plant, is susceptible to disease and pests. Most often, the flower has to be treated with special drugs for the following ailments:

  • yellow bacterial rot affects the leaves of the flower, appearing as gray spots on the foliage and bulbs. The process itself is accompanied by a clayey smell of decomposition;
  • apical rot. It is provoked by pathogenic microflora. It manifests itself in the form of brown depressions on flowers and foliage, the green mass is covered with gray mycelium, the roots rot;
  • mosaic. The leaves are the first to dry out, after the flowers and the bulb, elongated light green spots appear on the plant, which gradually turn yellow and dry;
  • gray rot can cause damage and death of the bulb. The plant falls ill most often at the beginning of active growth and development, ejection of the peduncle and manifests itself in the form of yellowish spots, which increase in size and acquire a brownish color.

Among pests, hyacinths most often affect:

  • tobacco thrips and aphids, which take juice from a healthy plant, provoking the death of the hyacinth. For protection and treatment, the plant is treated with a solution of apicides: phytoverm, acarin, accord;
  • nematodes are parasites that attack the stem and root galls.In most cases, the florist deals with the former, which parasitize the entire plant, both above and below ground. The bulb will soften, the growth of leaves and peduncle stops. Fitoverm is used to combat and prevent parasites.

What other problems can there be when growing hyacinths

Most often, growers notice the following changes:

  • the bulb does not knock out the flower. Most likely, the reason lies in the wrong temperature regime set during the distillation of the peduncle. Hyacinth does not like high temperatures;
  • foliage turns yellow. This problem can be provoked by improper watering, more precisely flooding the plant with water, or drafts. By eliminating the shortcomings and watering the plant correctly, you can revive it;

Disease prevention is the key to a healthy plant

  • the buds fall off. The reason is improper watering. It is important to water the hyacinth so that the water does not fall on the peduncle. Plus, it is defended in advance by heating it to room temperature;
  • decay of a flower. Excessive watering leads to such a problem in hyacinth care. It is important to give the plant a few days to "rest" so that the earthen lump dries up, and to reduce watering.

Hyacinth is an unpretentious plant, and with proper care, there will be no special reasons for concern and problems in its forcing.
