Rose Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe) - what is this variety

Among the many varieties of roses, the special love of flower growers is deserved by the hybrid tea flower, named by the breeders in honor of the author of "Faust" - the rose of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. This delicate plant is covered with bright red buds. It is unpretentious in maintenance and has a number of other breeding advantages, which will be discussed below.

Rose Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Goethe rose was obtained in the course of selection development in 2004. The honor of creating a new variety belongs to German breeders. The trade brand that popularized the variety among the population and, of course, sold it is Rosen Tantau.

Different stages of flowering

Brief description, characteristic

The variety of roses in question differs from all others in the presence of:

  • large crimson-red cupped buds (up to 15 cm in diameter);
  • densely double petals (from 95 to 100 in each bud);
  • pleasant scent (from the rose comes a sweet aroma, a mixture of honey and anise).

Blooms singly, leaves are large, firm, dark green. Rose bushes are powerful, but small, with regular haircuts, they look compact and do not take up much space in the flower bed - no more than 1.2 meters wide and 1 meter high.

Important! During flowering, the shade of the buds changes. Initially, the petals are red with an admixture of crimson, and after 1-2 days - pink with a slight touch of purple, so the flower in the picture and from the description of the variety may not coincide with reality.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

The advantages of the variety include:

  • resistance to adverse weather conditions: buds and leaves withstand heavy rainfall and do not lose their attractive appearance;
  • blooms for a very long time - all summer and part of autumn;
  • the ability to bloom again;
  • winter hardiness: if in winter the air temperature does not drop below –23 ° C, the flower will not even have to be covered;
  • resistance to many diseases and pests.

If the rose is improperly looked after (private watering, the wrong planting site), it does not develop. The buds form but never open.

Use in landscape design

Rosa Johann Wolfgang is often used by landscape designers to create amazing compositions. The bush is easy to shape, pink goes well with white, blue and red.

Saplings of this variety can be of different shades, in some more red, in others burgundy, raspberry or light pink. This allows you to plant nearby plants of the same variety and not worry about organizing special care for each bush. This variety is used to create hedges.

Growing a flower, how to plant it in open ground

Rosa Johann Wolfgang Goethe prefers well-lit areas of land that are inaccessible to groundwater and well ventilated.

In what form is the landing

Most often, planting is carried out in the form of seedlings. Rose seeds of this variety are not easy to get.

What time is the boarding

Boarding times vary by region. In the south, it may be late autumn, but in the north, it is necessarily spring, since a fragile plant can die even if greenhouse conditions are created for it for the winter.

Location selection

It is impossible to plant a plant directly where the scorching sun rays fall. It can burn and lose its attractiveness. It is necessary to pick up a not too shaded and dry area in the garden.

How to prepare the soil and flower for planting

Rose Goethe prefers black soil and loamy soil. In the latter case, you will have to constantly use organic fertilizers. Groundwater should be located no closer than 1 meter from the root system. This variety of roses likes not too acidic soils, with an acidity level of approximately pH 6.0 -6.5. If the soil is not acidic enough, they use peat or manure (they fertilize the land in the fall).

Important! To reduce the acidity level, the soil is sprinkled with ash or lime.

Planting procedure step by step

To plant a flower in the soil you will need:

  • shovel or hoe;
  • a bucket of water;
  • fertilizer: humus, compost;
  • peat for mulching;
  • drainage: gravel, crushed stone, river stones;
  • gloves, because the rose has many thorns.

To begin with, dig a hole up to 0.6 meters deep. The bottom is prepared in this way:

  • cover with drainage (10 cm not less);
  • fertilizer is placed on top of the drainage, creating a layer another 10 cm in size (manure is mixed with black soil);
  • fertilizer is covered with a 10 cm layer of earth.

When everything is ready, the rose is watered abundantly and removed from the container in which it previously grew. The plant is lowered by its roots for 10-15 minutes in a mixture of warm water and clay soil. The roots are straightened and lowered into the hole so that the root collar is located 3 cm below the top layer of the earth. This position will stimulate the growth of an additional stem higher than the grafting site.

Landing is carried out together. One person holds the bush at the desired height, and the second fills the hole with earth. The hole filled with earth is tamped and watered, trying to prevent the water from going somewhere sideways, but going under the roots. For this, a small mound of earth is made around the hole. For irrigation, 5 liters of water is enough.

Important! After 10-15 minutes after watering, the earth usually subsides, so you should not rush to remove the tool immediately after planting, you may have to add more soil and tamp it. Lands within a radius of 30-50 cm around the Wolfgang Goethe rose are mulched with peat.

Plant care

Rose johann wolfgang von goethe does not require special care. She is looked after, like any plant - periodically watered, sheared, fertilized.

Watering rules and humidity

Water the flower as the top soil layer dries. In hot weather, it is best to do this daily in the evenings. For moistening, 2-3 liters of water per 1 bush is enough. Watered with exceptionally warm, settled water, it is better to do this with a watering can or a mug with a special notch so that the water does not go to the side, leaving the roots dry.

Top dressing and soil quality

They are fed 2 times a year - in spring and summer. Nitrogen is added to the soil before bud formation, and phosphorus and potassium are added before summer flowering.

Pruning and replanting

The bushes are cut in the spring when the first buds appear. The size of the cut depends on the task at hand. So, if an old bush is planned to be rejuvenated, or a too young plant needs to be prevented from blooming, then the bushes are cut off at the level of 2-4 buds from the ground. To stimulate abundant early flowering and give beauty to the bush, it is pruned at the level of 6-7 buds.

In summer, bushes can also be trimmed, but the goal in this case is different. The grower removes stems with discolored flowers, making room for new ones.

Plants are transplanted in the spring; in the process of transplanting, you can carry out a small pruning. This will speed up the rooting process.

Features of wintering a flower

For the winter, the rose is covered with spruce paws or they make something like a hut over the stem from branches and old rags thrown over them. If severe frosts are not expected, the plants are not covered. This variety is adapted to frost; the rose will definitely not die from freezing of the soil.

Blooming rose

This variety blooms all summer and part of autumn. Young plants may have no more than 2-3 buds, but the bushes of adult roses are completely hung with flowers.

A period of activity and rest

The first buds swell at the end of March. In April-May, young leaves are already visible on the rose in the southern regions. Blooms in summer. The last buds usually wither in September. From October, the rose begins to prepare for the winter period. At this time, dried leaves are removed, the buds are trimmed, if necessary, the bushes are covered with coniferous branches.

Care during and after flowering

During flowering, it is enough to water the rose regularly. Towards the end of August, the number of waterings is reduced to 1 per week, and in September they are not watered at all or watered 1-2 times a month. Withered buds are cut off.

Important! If the rose is just planted in the soil and is already trying to bloom, then this should be prevented. The buds that appear are cut off and only at the end of August, 1 bud is left on each young bush, which will ensure the abundant flowering of the rose throughout the next year.

What to do if it does not bloom - possible reasons

If the rose does not bloom, you must:

  • transplant it to a new location;
  • fertilize the soil;
  • check if watering is abundant enough;
  • buy special preparations to stimulate growth and flowering.

The reason for the lack of flowers on the bush is sought in improper care or in an unsuitable place for planting. Perhaps the plant is sick, frozen in winter, or its roots have dried up due to lack of watering in spring (in the south, it is better to water the rose from May).

Flower propagation

This variety propagates by cuttings.

Cuttings

When breeding is done

The plant can be propagated both in spring and autumn. The main rule is not to cut the stems from the bushes that are now in bloom. Ideally, cuttings are obtained from roses that have already faded or are just preparing for the second wave of flowering.

Detailed description

From a 2-3-year-old bush, the stems are cut, up to 20 cm long, after which they are placed in warm water at room temperature for 2-3 days. At the end of the allotted period, the cuttings are transplanted into boxes with earth and covered with a film on top. Once a day, the film is removed and the branches are watered. Young plants are planted in the ground after the buds appear on the cuttings, and then the leaves.

Diseases, pests and ways to control them

Most often, Rosa Goethe suffers from the following problems:

Powdery mildew

  • powdery mildew: an unpleasant white bloom appears on the leaves, they themselves shrink and subsequently dry out;
  • rust: it affects the buds that have not yet blossomed and the root collar, the plant does not receive the nutrients it needs, it stops blooming;
  • black spot: the appearance of black spots on the leaves;
  • gray rot.

In all cases, the damaged parts of the plants are removed, the roses are sprayed with insecticides, the soil is regularly mulched, all the weeds are pulled out by the roots and destroyed away from the rose garden. Rose pests are almost not dangerous, but garden mites or thrips can move from other garden plants to rose bushes. They also use insecticides to control them.

Needs regular watering in summer

The johann wolfgang von goethe rose can be considered a decoration of any garden. It blooms all summer long, is not capricious, exudes a pleasant aroma that other varieties cannot boast of. Every gardener will be pleased to grow a flower in his flower bed.
