Rose Osiana (Osiana) - description of the hybrid variety

Rose is one of the most beautiful flowers found in temperate and subtropical gardens in the northern hemisphere. Many gardeners consider the hybrid to be the queen of flowers. In this case, a rose of the Osiana variety can be considered the queen of roses.

Rose of Osiana: history of creation, characteristics and description

The Osiana rose is the fruit of the work of German growers from the Rosen Tantau company. This variety belongs to the hybrid tea class, which was bred by crossing two other widespread classes: tea rose and remontant.

Rose of Osiana

For your information! As a result, a variation appeared that combines the frost resistance and beauty of the bud of tea roses and the continuity of flowering of remontant roses. In addition, hybrid tea roses have another significant advantage - re-flowering on the shoots of the current year.

Oceana rose buds are pastel shades and can range from ivory to salmon. Densely double flowers in the form of a glass with a diameter of 10-12 cm, are located one on each shoot from 1 to 1.5 m long. This hybrid, like the tea rose, has a pleasant, pronounced aroma peculiar only to this variety.

The foliage is dense, large, and has medium resistance to adverse conditions. Frost resistance of this variety and resistance to the most common diseases (black spot, powdery mildew) are lower compared to other varieties of roses in this class.

Roses are great for decorating the local area. Rose of Osiana is not suitable for vertical gardening of the site in the form of arches, waterfalls.

Important! This shrub rose is best used to decorate the landscape in the form of flower beds, paths or tall hedges.

The Osian rose can be combined in landscape design with other types of flowers and ornamental plants. It all depends on the imagination, taste and professionalism of the designer.

Rose of Oseana: cultivation, proper planting in open ground

The correct planting of any plant is the key to its long life and flowering. When deciding to start breeding hybrid tea roses, you need to be prepared for the fact that they are very whimsical, and you will have to constantly and carefully look after them.

The best time for planting Osiana rose seedlings is the very beginning of May, when the soil warms up to 10 ° C. When choosing a landing site, several mutually exclusive factors should be considered. Roses love the warmth of the sun, and intense sunlight can burn the petals or stem. Therefore, for planting, you should choose a place where there will be enough sunlight in the morning and evening hours, and in the daytime the bushes will be in the shade.

Planting seedlings

This variety also needs regular airing, but the flowers should be protected from the cold northerly winds. Therefore, low-lying places are not suitable, it is better to choose an even, often blown by winds, sheltered from the north side by the wall of the building.

The most suitable soil for the Osiana rose is black soil. It is possible to plant on loamy soils enriched with organic fertilizers.

Note! Roses of this variety are not suitable for swampy or waterlogged soils, so the level of groundwater at the planting sites should be at least a meter. It is also important to take into account the acidity of the soil, which for this flower should be in the range of 6-6.5 pH.To increase the acidity, peat or manure can be used, and lowering - ash or liming.

Before planting, seedlings with bare roots should be kept in a bucket of water for a couple of hours so that they are saturated with moisture.

Planting procedure (sequence of steps):

  1. Dig up the soil thoroughly and, depending on the type, add organic fertilizers (compost or manure), taking into account the acidity.
  2. Dig a hole and lay a drainage layer of fine gravel on its bottom. The thickness of the layer should be at least 10 cm. The width and depth of the hole is chosen so that the roots of the seedling are located in it freely, without bends and kinks. If you plan to plant several seedlings, the holes must be dug at a minimum distance of 70 cm from each other.
  3. Get the seedling out of the bucket of water in which it was before planting, straighten its roots and shorten them by a couple of centimeters.
  4. Lower the seedling into the hole so that the grafting site is 5-10 cm below ground level.
  5. Cover the hole with chernozem or fertilized soil and compact it thoroughly.

Important! After planting, the seedling must be watered abundantly. If the soil around the seedling has subsided, it should be poured over, making a mound to protect the buds of the flower from weather changes.

What care does the rose hybrid tea Osiana require?

As already mentioned, the Oceana rose is a rather whimsical plant. It is very hygrophilous, but waterlogging is contraindicated. In non-dry periods, it is sufficient to water the flowers once a week in the morning or evening. In hot or dry weather, rose bushes should be watered daily.

Watering the rose

The soil around the plant should be loosened regularly, weeds should be removed and the soil should be fertilized, which will contribute to its abundant and lush flowering.

For your information! In the spring, nitrogen must be added to the soil, and in the summer, phosphate and potassium.

In the first year of a young rosebush's life, you should not allow it to bloom. Until the very beginning of August, the buds must be removed from it. And starting from August, you can leave 1-2 flowers on the plant.

Pruning the Osian rose should begin in the spring, as soon as the buds begin to swell at the base of the bushes. Spring pruning is the most important for the plant, as it sets the direction of development of the plant.

Note! Before pruning, you should identify living branches with swelling buds and dead ones and take into account which shoots of the bush flowers are formed on (on old or young shoots).

Having determined for yourself the purpose of pruning (lush and abundant flowering or shaping the plant), you should proceed to the procedure itself. Strong pruning at the level of 2-4 buds from the base of the shoots is carried out to rejuvenate the bush, moderate pruning at the level of 5-7 buds is used to stimulate early flowering.

In the summer, the so-called weak pruning is carried out, in which faded buds are removed, thereby ensuring re-flowering.

In autumn, the plant is prepared for wintering - overgrown bushes are cut off, branches affected by the disease are removed.

There is no need to rush to prepare the bushes for wintering, since this variety of rose easily tolerates light frosts. But with the onset of stable low temperatures, the plants should be covered. For these purposes, spruce branches are most suitable. On top of it, you need to put insulation and cover it with plastic wrap.

Important! In early spring, it is necessary to begin to ventilate the bushes, lifting the floors of the film, and with the onset of heat, it must be completely removed so that the buds do not grow ahead of time.

Blooming rose

The flowering of this variety begins in June and lasts until late autumn. The first wave lasts from late June to late July. This is followed by a short period of rest, and the second wave begins, which ends in the fall.

For your information! During the period of active flowering, in order for the flowers to be large and beautiful, the plant especially needs watering.The rose loves clean water without salt impurities, so it is better to use rainwater for irrigation.

It should be watered with a thin stream so as not to injure the roots of the bush, while avoiding splashing on the leaves and buds, as this contributes to the appearance of fungal diseases.

In the first year of a rose bush's life, you do not need to fertilize the soil, since everything you need was introduced during planting. In the future, top dressing should be applied after spring pruning (first mineral fertilizers, then organic). Immediately after fertilization, the soil under the plant should be loosened and watered abundantly.

June bloom

If after the first year the rose has not bloomed, you should find out the cause and eliminate it.

  • Lack of sunlight is the wrong choice of planting site.
  • Incorrect pruning - the shoots were pruned too short in spring.
  • Improper care - insufficient feeding, lack of moisture, lack of pest control.
  • Root overgrowth indicating that the graft site was not deep enough at planting.
  • Aging - after three years, roses should be rejuvenated.

Flower propagation

The rose bush should be propagated by cuttings cut from semi-lignified shoots. This procedure is simple and does not require much experience. A suitable shoot is selected and cut into cuttings (with at least one bud and leaf) up to 10 cm long. After drying it for an hour, the cuttings should be planted in a nutritious substrate, providing it with sufficient moisture through plastic wrap.

Diseases, pests and ways to control them

The most common rose diseases are:

  • powdery mildew;
  • black spot;
  • rust.

All of them appear at high humidity, affect young shoots, leaves, buds. To get rid of the infection, burn the affected leaves and shoots and spray the plant with a copper-soap emulsion.

The most dangerous pests for rose bushes are:

  • spider mite;
  • green rose aphid;
  • rose leaflet;
  • rose-colored scale insect.

To combat them, it is necessary to remove pests from the plant and burn them, and the bush itself must be treated with either insecticides or bacterial preparations.

Rose Osiana, with proper care and choosing a planting site, can bloom for many years. This variety will bring joy to the grower and add beauty to the site.
