Dieffenbachia - reproduction at home

Every florist is faced with the breeding procedure for indoor plants. However, there are many ways to do this, and not all of them can be easily tolerated by the plant. For example, before propagating dieffenbachia at home, it is worth considering the physiological properties of the plant. It tolerates well any methods of procedure, but vegetative methods are complicated by the ability of the flower to secrete poisonous sap.

Popular seating methods

There are two groups into which the methods of reproduction are subdivided:

  • vegetative, when the bush is divided into several parts together with the rhizome, cuttings, cuttings or leaves are rooted;
  • generative or sowing seeds.

Dieffenbachia tolerates the breeding procedure normally

To the question of how dieffenbachia reproduces, the answer is obvious - the most popular methods are vegetative methods. Moreover, for rooting, not only parts of a bush with a root system will fit, but also segments of shoots or leaves.

Note! The flower cannot be propagated by seeds due to its very rare flowering.

Propagation of dieffenbachia by cuttings

When indoor plant lovers talk about such a flower as dieffenbachia, they remember reproduction by cuttings first of all. The fact is that this method gives the best survival rates.

For this method, you need to prepare cuttings from the stem. It is short in dieffenbachia, but very dense and thick. It is necessary to separate the shoot 5-8 centimeters long from the main bush with an oblique cut. It is very important to leave at least 3 dormant buds on each stem cut (they look like small arc patterns).

All cuts and other mechanical damage must be treated with strong root-forming stimulants - most often flower growers prefer Kornevin.

It is necessary to deepen the cuttings into the substrate by 3-4 centimeters. Then moisten the ground and cover the container with a glass or plastic dome. A month later, you can transplant it into a separate pot.

The apical cutting should be much larger than the normal stem

Propagation by apical cuttings

Dieffenbachia propagation by the top of the bush is carried out with the aim of renewal and rejuvenation. Cut off 15-25 centimeters of the stem along with the leaves and process the cuts with charcoal.

After that, the stem cutting is placed in water or a moistened nutrient soil mixture. After 3 weeks, it will already be fully rooted.

Seed propagation

This method is not used at home, only by scientists in breeding work. Before planting, the seeds are first soaked in a nutritious and strengthening saline solution, which will help increase their germination. You need to deepen them into the ground by 1-2 centimeters. Sprinkle the soil with water on top and cover with a glass dome or a regular plastic bag. After 1-1.5 months, the seedlings will grow and get stronger.

Step-by-step algorithm of how to plant dieffenbachia after germination:

  1. Carefully remove each seedling along with the clod of soil without damaging the roots.
  2. Prepare individual pots with substrate and make holes in them.
  3. Arrange one seedling at a time and cover them with earth.
  4. Tamp the soil and water it.

Propagation by air layers

This process is slightly different from how it is done with other indoor flowers. However, it is quite popular and easy to perform.

How to propagate dieffenbachia using air layers:

  1. An incision is made on the sturdy trunk, and it is slightly opened. They put a small chip between them and cover them with moistened moss on all sides.
  2. A plastic wrap is tied over this structure.
  3. Every 3 days, open the cellophane and moisten the moss, if necessary, you can replace it.
  4. When small roots appear from the cut, the stem is completely cut off and planted in the substrate.

Dieffenbachia leaf propagation

Reproduction by a leaf does not give great guarantees that it will take root in the ground, however, it is often used in home floriculture.

To carry out the procedure, the lower leaves are cut off, since they are closest to the root system. They can be placed either in plain water or in a nutritious, moist substrate. Cover with foil on top and wait for the roots to appear.

Plant propagation by part of the root

You can propagate spotted dieffenbachia by dividing the rhizome. This procedure is most effective in the spring. It is necessary to remove the bush from the container and moisten the soil with the roots. Straighten them carefully and divide them into several equal parts. Place all the roots in separate containers and wait for complete engraftment.

Note! This method of reproduction is suitable when the rejuvenation of the flower is necessary and when the old soil is depleted.

In addition to vertical rooting, the horizontal method is also used.

Rooting process and planting

There are several ways to root dieffenbachia:

  • you can plant cuttings, leaves directly into the substrate vertically;
  • horizontal rooting is quite common, when planting material is placed in the ground, slightly pressing it;
  • roots can also appear when the cuttings are kept in ordinary water.

How to plant dieffenbachia after rooting in a container:

  1. Prepare in advance a pot with a substrate prepared from light earth, humus and river sand.
  2. Cover the bottom of the container with a small layer of drainage.
  3. Fill in the soil mixture by a third of the volume.
  4. Place a seedling on top of it and cover it with the remaining substrate.
  5. Tamp and water the bush.
  6. Place in a lighted and warm place.

Follow-up care of seedlings

Further care for dieffenbachia should be as follows:

  • lighting - slightly diffused;
  • temperature - from +21 to +27 degrees in summer and about +19 .. + 20 degrees in winter;
  • watering - twice a week with constant loosening of the soil;
  • humidity - high, regular spraying of the bush with water is required;
  • transplant - only with the growth of the root system and some types of reproduction.

Diseases and pests of dieffenbachia

All problems during reproduction, the appearance of pests and diseases of the bush are due to the negligence and carelessness of the owner. The appearance of root rot or other fungal diseases provokes the introduction of infections through flower cuts. Before and after each planting work, you need to thoroughly disinfect your garden tools.

After the correct transplantation, the plant will decorate the interior of the house for a long time.

Mealybugs, aphids, scale insects and spider mites can also be transmitted through already infected planting material. Therefore, a healthy and strong bush must be used for reproduction.

After planting dieffenbachia in the ground, it is necessary to create the climatic conditions necessary for its cultivation, because too dry air provokes the appearance and reproduction of insect pests.

Evergreen deciduous dieffenbachia has a high decorative appearance. It is easy to propagate an indoor flower, and care does not require special skills. The main thing for a flower is to create and maintain optimal indoor conditions. And for any breeding method, use a disinfected tool, high-quality planting material, clean soil and containers.
