Yucca flower - reproduction at home

Yucca is an unusual plant that looks like a palm tree. With long-term cultivation at home, it becomes necessary to multiply the plant, since it grows very much over time.

Indoor yucca: breeding at home

In most cases, yucca reproduces vegetatively - that is, parts of the plant. But you can also try planting flower seeds. The most popular growing methods are:

  • seeds;
  • air layering;
  • part of the root;
  • sheet.

All of these methods are pretty simple. The main thing is to properly plant and provide further care so that the plant takes root as quickly as possible.

Propagation of yucca by cuttings

With long-term cultivation of this flower, reproduction is simply necessary. The easiest way to grow a plant is cuttings. But there are other ways that will be discussed later.

The most optimal time for yucca propagation by cuttings is late winter or early spring.

How yucca propagates by cuttings:

  • For planting, side shoots (if any) or the top are used - you need to graft them exactly.
  • The top or shoot is cut off with a sharp pruner so that no creases remain.
  • Then the cutting is dried for several hours.
  • Rooted in sand or water.
  • When rooting in sand, the lower part of the cutting is added with a little sand. The stem is placed under a film, and the sand is regularly moistened. So the stalk will give roots much faster.
  • In 1.5-2 months, new young leaves should appear. As soon as this has happened, the cutting can be transplanted into the ground.

It is easier to root the stalk in water. Pour filtered boiled water into a jar and put the stem there.

Planting by cuttings

Important! After a few weeks, the cutting will give roots and then it can be transplanted into the ground.

Seed propagation

Yucca breeding can be done by planting seeds. In order to sprout as much as possible, the seeds must be fresh. It is also recommended to select high-quality planting material in advance.

How to propagate yucca by seed

Before propagating a flower with seeds, you need to select planting material. To do this, dissolve salt in warm water and add seeds. Those that fall to the bottom can be planted.

How yucca reproduces by seeds at home:

  • Before sowing, the planting material is soaked for a day in warm water.
  • Next, you need to mix in equal parts sod and leafy soil with peat.
  • Press each seed into the soil and cover with soil.

At the end of planting, water the soil, cover the pots with glass so that the seeds germinate faster.

Propagation by air layers

This method is used if it is necessary to rehabilitate a plant after an illness.

How to grow a yucca from a scion? The step-by-step process looks like this:

  1. For propagation by air layers, only hard areas are suitable, on which there is no rot.
  2. Cut off the layering, clear the lower cut from the bark.
  3. Cover the lower cut with sphagnum moss, which must be periodically moistened.
  4. The first roots should appear in about a month.

The cuttings are transplanted into pots after the roots have grown to a length of 5 cm.

After studying this method, it becomes clear that one of the simplest methods for propagating an indoor flower.

Plant propagation by part of the root

An easy way to plant yucca at home is with part of the root.

Attention! This method is suitable if the flower has grown a lot, and the root system no longer fits in the pot. One of the conditions for using this method is that the plant must have two or more trunks.

How to plant a yucca with part of the root:

  • You need to take the plant, remove it from the pot.
  • Divide the rhizome with a sharp pruner into as many parts as the trunks have grown.
  • Treat the cut sites with crushed activated carbon.
  • Then dry the roots for 2 hours.
  • Plant each part in a separate pot.

After dividing, the slices should be sprinkled with charcoal to prevent root rot.

Rooting process and planting

After the first stage, it is important to carry out proper rooting and planting of the yucca in the new soil.

How to root a yucca:

  • When propagating by cuttings and propagation by layering, it is necessary to root the seedling.
  • Rooting is carried out after a strong root system has formed.
  • In order for the roots to develop as quickly as possible, the seedling must be covered with a cut bottle. Due to the higher temperature under the bottle, the roots will grow faster.

How to transplant into the ground:

  • The capacity should be appropriate for the plant. The larger it is, the larger the pot should be.
  • Expanded clay is poured at the bottom of the pot so that moisture does not stagnate and the roots do not rot.
  • Fill the container halfway with soil and place the plant there. Fill it with the second part of the soil.

At the end of planting, water the flower abundantly with warm water and wood ash.

Follow-up care of seedlings

Reproduction of room yucca is impossible without proper organized care. The plant is light-loving, so the pot should be placed where there will be diffused light.

Regularly you need to wipe the leaves from dust and take a shower. During the shower, the soil should be covered with polyethylene so as not to overmoisten the soil.

In winter and summer, yucca does not need fertilizers. In spring and autumn, the flower can be watered with manure or mullein diluted in water. Sometimes the flower should be fed with complex mineral fertilizers. In general, yucca does not need frequent feeding and grows well without them.

For reference! At home, there is almost never a bloom, even when the conditions are ideal.

Diseases and pests

Most often, diseases arise from:

  • watering with cold water;
  • drafts;
  • waterlogging of the soil;
  • damage to the root system.

If the leaves begin to wither and fall off, you need to remove the plant from the pot, cut off the damaged areas of the roots, treat the rhizome with a disinfectant.

Of the pests are found:

  • mealybug;
  • shield;
  • aphid;
  • spider mite.

To combat these insects, you need to spray the plant with insecticides. For example, Aktara or Karbofos work well. Iskra Bio helps with spider mites.

Additional Information! Before you start spraying with insecticides, the flower must be treated with soapy water.

Yucca is an unpretentious plant that does not require special growing conditions. It is very easy to propagate it. Cuttings and shoots quickly take root in a new place.
