Pelargonium rosebud - how to care for geraniums

Rosebud Pelargoniums are a group of hybrid varieties of indoor geraniums characterized by lush, rose-like flowers. These varieties are more difficult to grow than the classic ones. To achieve their flowering, it is important to observe special conditions of detention.

Pelargonium rosebud - botanical description and classification

Pelargonium came to Europe from Africa thanks to travelers and colonialists. According to the description, it belongs to the Geranium family. Various plant varieties are adapted for indoor and outdoor cultivation.

Pelargonium rosebud

Due to the variety of flower varieties, as well as the many hybrid varieties, there is currently no clear classification. Most often, the following types of pelargonium are distinguished:

  • zonal;
  • ivy or ampelous;
  • royal;
  • angels;
  • unique;
  • fragrant.

Geranium rosebud, otherwise called rosaceous, arose due to an accidental mutation in the 18th century. Subsequent selection work was carried out purposefully, as a result of which a huge variety of varieties of pink pelargonium were bred.

Varieties of indoor plants

Geranium varieties are distinguished by their splendor flowering and a wide palette of colors. Not only flowers can have a decorative appearance, but also leaf plates of some varieties.

A huge number of rosebund pelargoniums bred

  • Rose of Amsterdam

Rose of Amsterdam is one of the miniature fast growing varieties. Terry inflorescences are painted in white-pink shades. As the plant ages, the buds become more and more bright.

  • Suprem

Rosebud Supreme features deep crimson double flowers with white undersides of petals. Under the right conditions, flowering can continue all year round.

For reference! Supreme is characterized by a late entry into the flowering season compared to similar varieties.

  • Apple Blossom

Apple Blossom Rosebud is one of the oldest pelargonium varieties. It has, as the name suggests, a delicate apple green color with a rich pink edging.

The variety is quite whimsical, requires shading, frequent fertilization and pruning.

  • Vectis

"Vectis Rosebud" is a miniature zonal variety with large wine-red buds and a light underside of the petals. Lush disheveled inflorescences last for a long time. The leaves are colored dark green.

  • Red pelargonium "Rosebud Red"

Pelargonium Rosebud Red with deep red flowers. The inflorescences are densely packed, forming almost continuously throughout the year. Does not require molding.

  • Beverly park

Pelargonium with double, apricot-colored buds with a lighter, almost white edging. The leaf plates are green, darkening towards the central part.

For reference! Beverly Park - suitable for those who prefer non-standard red tones.

  • Princess mary

Compact early flowering variety. Leaves are uniformly green. Inflorescences are dense, greenish-white. As the flowers fade, the petals turn pink.

  • Rushmoor golden rosebud

Rashmur gold is distinguished by bright pink, not too densely stuffed flowers. The leaf plates are light, golden-green in color.

Caring for rosebud pelargonium at home

Rose geranium requires a special attitude towards itself, it should be looked after, observing certain rules. By adhering to them, you can achieve long lush flowering.

Watering should be regular and moderate

Illumination and temperature conditions

Pelargonium rosebud tolerates bright sunlight and partial shade well. On a personal plot, it can be planted on an alpine slide, placed in a hanging planter or set up a flowerpot in the shade of trees.

Note! With a lack of lighting, the foliage of the geranium is lightened and may fall off, the stems are stretched, flowering is late or does not occur at all.

The flower does not tolerate heat very well. The maximum permissible temperature is 28 ° C. Otherwise, the plant will become lethargic, and the flowers will crumble earlier than expected.

Watering rules and humidity

Pelargonium bushes should be watered sparingly. The flower tolerates drought much more easily than excessive moisture and stagnant water.

The plant almost does not respond to a decrease in the level of humidity in the room. In rare cases, the leaf edges may dry out.

It is not advisable to spray pelargonium. The accumulation of moisture on the fleecy leaves can cause them to rot. You can humidify the air using a tray with pebbles and water.

Top dressing and soil quality

The soil for rosebud geranium for home care can be purchased in specialized stores or mixed with your own hands. Taking a universal soil mixture, perlite and sand can be mixed into it in order to achieve better air permeability.

Self-preparation of the soil assumes the following proportions of the components:

  • peat - 2 parts;
  • sod soil - 4 parts;
  • river sand and perlite - 1 part each;
  • humus - 2 parts.

It is recommended to feed the flower from the end of February. The introduction of nitrogen-containing fertilizers will allow the bush to gain green mass. Closer to the onset of the flowering period, potassium and phosphorus are added to the top dressing.

Rosebud pelargonium requires feeding

Flower container size

Planters for pink geraniums are selected small, from unglazed ceramics. The soil in such a container will dry out better, and the roots will receive enough air.

Pruning and replanting

Pruning of rosebud pelargonium is carried out twice a year. In autumn, the old shoots that have dropped the leaves are cut off, the elongated stems are made shorter by at least a third. In the spring, only a gentle pinching is carried out, otherwise the plant may not bloom on time.

The transplant is carried out as the bush grows, but at least once every 2 years. You can understand that a change of pots is required by the roots knocking out through the drainage holes.

Also, a transplant can be carried out for the purpose of reproduction, separating independent young bushes. It is recommended to carry out the procedure in the spring.

Features of flowering plants

Geranium looks unattractive without its luxurious inflorescences. You can achieve abundant flowering from it by providing suitable conditions.

Pelargonium usually blooms in spring-summer. With the onset of the autumn-winter period, only the plant for which the optimal lighting regime has been created will bloom. When kept in the south or west window, the inflorescences may not leave the bush throughout the summer. But it is worth considering that without proper rest, they will gradually become smaller, become less lush and bright.

In appearance, the inflorescences and the flowers of rosebud geranium themselves may differ depending on which varieties and species were used in the breeding of this particular plant. The buds of some hybrids are very dense and resemble roses as much as possible, like the red rosebud pelargonium. In other varieties, the buds may be more disheveled and loose.

Flower reproduction methods

Rosebud geranium reproduces in the same way as any other species. Most often, two methods are used: cuttings and sowing seeds.

Cuttings can be planted immediately in the ground

Propagation by cuttings

This method can be used at any time of the year. For germination, lateral shoots with 2-3 leaves are cut from the bush.

The cut of the cutting is dipped in crushed activated carbon and placed in a shaded place for several hours. After this procedure, the cutting can be placed in water to germinate the roots.

Seed propagation

Geranium propagation by sowing seed is a rather laborious process. But in this case, you can get many young viable plants.

Seeds are planted at a distance of 5 cm from each other, kept in a growth stimulator. A greenhouse is built above the crops, placed on a lighted windowsill, after which airing and spraying are regularly carried out.

Additional Information!To speed up the emergence of sprouts, the seeds can be rubbed against sandpaper.

Growing problems, diseases and pests

Geraniums can look unhealthy for several main reasons, which are outlined below. To protect the flower, they resort to regular inspection:

  • Yellowing of the leaves indicates excessive dryness of the indoor air and lack of lighting. You can cope with the problem by rearranging the pots with geraniums in a suitable place.
  • The lethargy of leaves and stems means an excess of moisture at the roots of the plant. In such a situation, it is important to adjust the watering.
  • Rose flowers dry and wither when the plant is affected by a fungal infection. Two-time treatment of the bush with "Fitosporin" at weekly intervals can help.
  • When a bacterial disease occurs, geranium leaves become covered with brown spots. The solution is an urgent transplant into decontaminated soil, treatment with fungicides and regulation of the irrigation regime.
  • Although the plant repels most insect pests, it can be killed by aphids or whiteflies. Get rid of them using appropriate insecticides.

Rosebud geranium blooms very luxuriantly

With proper care, the grower will not have to face problems when growing pelargonium.

The beauty of rosebud geranium flowers, similar to miniature, almost toy roses, is unique. The view of the lush inflorescences of pink pelargonium justifies and covers all the efforts that were made to grow the plant in a house or apartment.
