Gloriosa flower: home care and planting examples

An unrealistically beautiful plant that truly deserves to be called a queen among flowering vines. The whole gloriosa is beautiful: the flower has no analogues in shape, the leaves are rich in color, and also interesting in their structure. The slightly deflected petals of the bud create an artificial flame on the shoots from the flower itself.

Varieties

Gloriosa Rothschild (Gloriosa rothschildiana)

It is believed that this liana plant is native to Africa. Rapidly developing shoots, twisting around a trellis, form an interesting flower in the form of a basket.

Gloriosa

Gloriosa Rothschild has an unusual color of flowers - yellowish with reddish strokes. This representative of the family does not impose any special requirements for care, the only nuance is its intolerance to direct sunlight.

Gloriosa simplex

This representative of flowering vines differs from its relatives in the family with a thick shoot, which branches very strongly. In some cases, simple gloriosa grew more than 3 meters. The leaves are bright green, lanceolate, in gloriosa, the flowers, according to the description, consist of six petals, in the heart there are about the same number of stamens. Each petal has its own unique slightly wavy shape.

Gloriosa Daisy

The species of gloriosa Daisy is not much like other representatives of flowering vines.

The plant is annual, the flowers are more like chamomile buds, only the color of the petals echoes the flowers of gloriasis. Plant height does not exceed 1 meter.

Gloriosa superba

Among other members of the family, this species is the most decorative. It prefers to grow on clay soils. The plant can reach a height of 2-2.5 meters. It has glossy leaves.

Preparation for wintering

The buds of magnificent gloriosa appear from the sinuses, the petals have a bright red hue, they are wavy in shape. It is also called luxurious gloriosa.

Gloriosa Citrine

The variety was bred on the basis of the Rothschild gloriosa species. The plant differs from its predecessor in more voluminous lemon-colored flowers, at their base there are various reddish streaks.

Home care

The flower has a pronounced dormant period, therefore, when planning to grow at home, this should be taken into account, since it is important in the development of the plant. Literally a couple of days after the end of flowering, the plant begins to prepare for wintering.

The aerial part gradually begins to fade, then die off. When the natural processes of flower preparation are complete, the tubers should be removed from the soil and placed in a cool storage. It is advisable to place them in a box with sawdust. This feature of the plant allows you to grow it not only in the room, but also in the open field.

Important! If the plant is left dormant in pots with soil, it will not rest and will start growing again. This will cause the flower to be weak and not bloom and will also affect the condition of the leaves.

When storing tubers, it is necessary to control the temperature regime (it should not be higher than 10 degrees, but not lower than 7) and humidity (it should be medium) in the room.

Taking into account the nuances of care, the plant will delight with its interesting flowering for a long time.

Lighting

This flower plant needs good lighting. It blooms only in summer, so you should be careful when placing it on the window - direct sunlight can damage the buds and leaves. At noon it is worth shading the vine.

Temperature regime

For the normal development of vines, it is required to maintain an optimal temperature in the room: from 20 to 26 degrees. Also, the plant does not tolerate drafts, it is worth considering this when planting in an open space or setting a pot on a balcony.

Humidity

Every day it is necessary to spray the room where the gloriosa grows. Planting and home care includes maintaining optimal moisture for the plant. Vine leaves can be sprayed, but water should not be allowed to get on the flowers - gloriosa reacts badly to this.

Watering

Watering the plant during the period of active growth is necessary every couple of days; during the flowering period, more frequent watering may be required. Flowering vines are watered with settled tap water, but it is better to use rainwater.

Important! Closer to the dormant period, the frequency of watering decreases; during the wintering period, plants are not watered at all.

Flower support

Requires support for Rothschild gloriosa. Planting and caring for the plant includes a garter during reproduction and active growth when the plant begins to curl.

Plant transplant

The dormant period for the plant ends in the last days of February - early March. It is at this time that it is necessary to examine the tubers more carefully. With the first signs of bud awakening, plants are transplanted into a new container.

Helpful. During the period of active growth, gloriasis consumes large quantities of nutrients from the soil, so they need to be regularly replenished in order for the plant to feel comfortable.

For transplantation, it is worth choosing containers that are not very deep, but elongated. It is desirable that the diameter is between 14 and 18 centimeters. The prepared substrate is poured into the container, the tuber of the plant is planted to a depth of 3 cm.

Gloriosa transplant

There must be drainage at the bottom of the container. After a complete transplant, it is necessary to tie up the plant so that it recovers faster and starts growing.

Reproduction methods

For breeding, two methods of propagation are used: seeds and tubers.

Seeds

You can grow gloriosa from seeds at home. This method is a rather slow breeding method, but it is quite effective, even for production purposes.

Sequencing:

  • First, you will need to manually pollinate the flowers of the plant;
  • Ripe seeds are sown in a nutritious soil (the composition is described above);
  • Crops are sprayed with water;
  • Then the containers with crops are covered with foil and placed in a warm room. The temperature there must be kept from 22 to 25 degrees Celsius;
  • After emergence, the polyethylene is removed;
  • After another week, the plants dive, each future bush is planted separately.

    Seed propagation

Tubers

Large gloriosa tubers are divided into several parts, then transplanted into new containers with fresh soil. Before planting, the cut sites are treated with ash (crushed charcoal).

Sequencing:

  1. A healthy tuber is selected. The aerial part is removed.
  2. The planting material is divided into small pieces of 2-3 cm.
  3. Fragments of a tuber are planted in a prepared container with a substrate, sprouts up.

Important! For reproduction, a special soil is prepared. It is mixed from turf (1 part), humus (2 parts), sand (0.5 parts) and leafy earth (2 parts).

  1. After that, it is necessary to sprinkle the planting material and substrate with water.
  2. Prepared plantings for germination are covered with polyethylene and placed in a room where the thermal regime is maintained at 20 degrees.

Tuber propagation

Periodically, it is required to check the appearance of roots and seedlings, if necessary, spray young plants and substrate. Seedlings in the first month are very fragile, so you will need to tie them up.

If you take care of gloriosa according to all the recommendations, taking into account every nuance, the plant will easily adapt to its habitat and will delight with flowering and new shoots for many years.
