Orchid baby on a peduncle: examples of how to grow and root

Growing orchids, the florist will sooner or later think about how to get offspring from them. There are several ways to do this. However, the most effective one at home is getting babies. The article will describe in more detail what needs to be done for this and how to grow beautiful orchids full of strength from them.

Orchid babies

This plant has the ability to reproduce, forming children. After the flower has faded, two small leaves will grow from the dormant bud on its stem, after a while. Over time, the formation of the root system will occur.

After the formation is complete, the young plant can be detached and planted separately.

Description

Using Phalaenopsis orchid babies is the easiest way to propagate this plant at home. They can be of two types:

  • grown on a peduncle;
  • basal.

The latter use the root system of the mother plant. They are formed in cases where the plant will soon cease to exist and before that gives up its vitality for reproduction.

To grow new Phalaenopsis, they use those that grow on peduncles after the flowers have wilted. They grow out of dormant buds. Within six months, babies form a root system. After that, they need to be disconnected and deposited. Then the sprouts need to be grown until they gain strength.

How do they look

Babies on peduncles appear some time after the end of flowering. In some cases, several of them can grow. Sometimes they don't form. However, you need to know what to do if the orchid has a baby.

As soon as they start to grow, green leaves can be seen growing from the dormant bud. After a few months, the root system begins to emerge. It looks like several sprouts of white color, each of which ends with a green sharp end. Usually two or three of these root tines are formed.

Note! Before plants can be planted, they must be 4-5 centimeters or more in length. The shoots can develop in different directions from the trunk.

How to raise a baby on a peduncle

After the orchid has faded, you need to wait a while. In this case, it may turn out that the sleeping bud has awakened, and green leaves began to grow from it. This suggests that an orchid baby is starting to grow on a peduncle. To form it, you need to spend at least six months. Sometimes in such a situation, another peduncle can grow.

The appearance of leaves suggests that appropriate care must be provided for the further formation of a new plant. In order to plant and root a baby, it is necessary to ensure the formation of the root system. The shoots should be 4-6 centimeters long. Before they appear, a spherical thickening must form on the branch, from which they will grow.

Examples on a cut peduncle

Cultivation can be carried out not only on a full-fledged plant, but also on a cut peduncle. This is another version of how an orchid gives children.

Awakened kidney

To do this, cuttings of no more than 5 centimeters can be cut from it, provided that each of them has a sleeping kidney. After detachment, the branch is placed in a greenhouse, where it is carefully looked after, ensuring formation and growth.

This option is usually used only in cases where Phalaenopsis is sick and it is no longer possible to save him.

For cultivation, the peduncle is placed in a plastic bottle, the neck of which must be cut off. Its depth should be such that the plant can fit comfortably. Boiled and settled water is poured into the container by 2-3 centimeters. You need to add one tablet of activated carbon.

Important! Provide good lighting for the plants. However, they should not be placed in direct sunlight. If the peduncle is placed on a windowsill, then during the active sun it needs to provide shading.

When you want to see dormant buds on a branch, you need to take into account that they may not wake up at all. In this case, they are encouraged to help. They are usually covered with bark, which must be cut off. This must be done carefully. In this case, a circular incision is made with a razor, then the bark is carefully removed. Tweezers are sometimes used for this purpose.

After that, it is recommended to lubricate the kidney with a special stimulating paste based on cytokinins. This treatment is carried out once a week for a month.

For the initial maintenance of peduncles, it is necessary to provide a temperature of 25-28 degrees. If this is not done, then another peduncle will grow.

Detaching the baby

When the awakening of the kidney occurs, the neck must be regularly stimulated by lubricating with a composition containing fertilizers. This should be done twice a week. The fluid in the container must be changed weekly. When the root system is formed, the sprout is detached and planted separately.

How to grow and root roots

When the bud has woken up, you need to know how to grow an orchid baby from a peduncle. To do this, it is necessary to help it grow roots of the required length. There is an opportunity to accelerate their growth.

For this, Phalaenopsis baby must be moistened with stimulating solutions: Kornevin or Heteroauxin. Perhaps for this purpose also use natural remedies: a solution of honey in water or aloe juice.

In order to enhance root growth, sphagnum moss can be used. It must be moistened in a solution of one of the stimulants and, with the help of a thread, attached to the baby in the place where the roots should grow.

Note! Watering must be done daily with a spray bottle. When the roots begin to grow, the moss is removed. If this is not done, then waterlogging may occur.

After the roots grow up to 4-6 cm, the baby must be separated. This can be done by cutting off a part of the peduncle several centimeters long along with the sprout.

Sometimes several shoots form on one branch. In order to cut them off, you can use sharp scissors or a scalpel, carefully separating the baby from the peduncle less than 1 cm above and below its location.

Important! It is recommended to disinfect the instruments before use. To do this, it is enough to dip them in boiling water.

Now you need to plant and root the shoots. To do this, it is recommended to do the following:

  1. The cut point is lubricated with coal dust for disinfection.
  2. For planting, you need to prepare plastic bottles with a cut off top. Their depth should be such that the roots fit freely. Several holes are made at the bottom in order to provide drainage.
  3. Plants need to be kept in water so that it covers the roots. Do this for 20 minutes. This is to ensure that they are not overdried when placed in plastic pots.
  4. Now you need to prepare the substrate in which the children of Cattleya or Phalaenopsis will grow. It is prepared in a separate container. A small piece of charcoal is placed there, crushed bark is poured, then sphagnum moss is added in small pieces.
  5. After that, you need to place the children in plastic containers, cutting them so that their depth corresponds to the root system. Then the substrate is poured so that it covers the roots.

Cut baby

When the root system develops and the orchids take root, they can be planted in their permanent places.

Baby care

When the baby on the Phalaenopsis peduncle is disconnected and planted in a plastic pot, optimal conditions must be provided for its development. To do this, it is covered with polyethylene and provided with suitable growth conditions. It is necessary to ventilate daily.

Important! Adequate light should be provided. The optimal daylight hours for these plants is at least 5-6 hours. In this case, it is important that they do not fall on direct rays when the sun is strong.

Flowers can be removed from the greenhouse after a few more leaves have grown on the sprouts. After that, they can be looked after in the same way as for adult plants.

Temperature

When growing in a greenhouse, it is necessary for the plants to provide a high temperature, which will stimulate the growth of leaves and the formation of roots.

Humidity

It is necessary to provide a high level of moisture for the plant.

Growing in a plastic cup

However, it is necessary that waterlogging does not occur, as this can lead to rotting of the roots.

Watering

Watering should be regular, but not excessive. It is best done by spraying. For watering, it is recommended to use water at room temperature, which has been previously boiled, cooled and insisted.

Reproduction of an orchid by growing children will allow you to get viable and beautiful plants at home.
